The Law of Moses: Added and Abolished

Galations 3:23-25
"But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. (24) Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. (25) But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster."

These verses teach that a law has been done away. However, which law has been done away? Most people consider that this law is the Mosaic Law. This is correct. What is the Mosaic Law? Most preachers and Christians believe that God's Law and the law of Moses are one and the same. This however is not true. Paul, in most places in scripture, where he discusses the law describes which law he is talking about. Here is an example in Galations 3:19.

"Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator."

This verse is commonly used to teach that the whole law is no longer in effect. The key here is to notice the two identifying marks as to which law is being discussed. The first identifying mark is that the law here is one that was "added". Adding to this from Galation 3:17 we know that this law was added 430 years after the time of the promises.

"And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect."

It was a law that was added at Mount Sinai after the Israelites left the Egyptian captivity. Now it was more than 430 years since the promises were made to Abraham. It was 430 years when you count the promises also made to Jacob-Israel, 430 years after that time, the times of the promises. The second identifying mark is that it was to be a law that would end when the "seed should come". Paul later identifies the seed as the Christ. Christ then instituted the new covenant. Now the question is, "Do either of these two marks identify God's Law?" In other words were God's Laws or God's commands, statutes and judgements added after the times of the promises? Were God's Moral Laws in existence before Moses ascended Mount Sinai?

What is the very nature of God? Is not God's nature his morality? Is not his morality his very essence? So if you say that God's Law did not exist until the time of Moses then essentially you are saying that God did not exist until Moses. That makes God nothing more than a man made tribal god, which is what modern Jews teach about him today. We know that God existed before the time of Moses and so did his moral laws. Here is what Moses said about God existing before Mount Sinai.

Genesis 26:4-5
"And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; (5) Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws."

There are many more examples from scripture. God's Laws were a part of the Abrahamic covenant and they were handed down from father to son for generations. God's Laws were also a part of the Adamic covenant. Even the food laws concerning clean and unclean animals were in existence. How many of each type of animal went into the ark with Noah? They were counted by whether they were clean or unclean. (Genesis 7:2-3) Noah was not told which animals were clean and unclean. He knew which were which. Why? Because God had given those laws to his people verbally before Mount Sinai. They were in existence all the way back to Adam. As you can see God's Laws do not fit the description that Paul provided for us in Galations 3:19. God's Laws were just codified by Moses at Mount Sinai. They were finally written down.

The second mark said that the laws would not continue when Christ came. Is murder still wrong? Is it still wrong to steal? How about homosexuality? Well on that one it is not according to man's law. It is, however, according to God's moral Law. If God does not have absolutes then we could just follow the whim of man. All of these things are still against God's Law because it is still in effect. Now some will say that of course those sins are still wrong because they are repeated in the new testament which states that they are wrong. The line goes, "Only those sins repeated in the new testament are sins for us today". However, our bible, both old and new testaments, teach us that God does not change.

Malachi 3:6
"For I Yahweh change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed."

Hebrews 13:8
"Jesus Christ isthe same yesterday, and to day, and for ever."

Yahweh has not changed and neither has his Son, Yahshua. (Hebrew - "Yahshua" means "Yahweh Saves") If the bible says that Yahweh (God) or Yahshua (Christ) do not change then neither do His Laws. If we can not depend on God's morality staying the same then we can not count on God at all. For those that teach only the new testament it is time they begin teaching that incest and bestiality are morally acceptable. There is nothing in the new testament that prohibits those two old testament sins. They are, however, still against God's moral Law because God's moral Law is still in effect. Also we know in our hearts that those two sins are still wrong. Someone will then say, "You can't depend on your heart". Then they will quote Jeremiah 17.9

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

About that they will be right or rather Jeremiah was right. Our heart is desperately sick for the most part, but that is true when our heart is telling us something different than what God's Law proclaims. When our heart is in harmony with God's Law that is altogether a different thing. We can depend on our hearts when we are depending on the Law written on our hearts.

Ask the average Christian or preacher who the new covenant was made with and most will not be able to tell you or at the best the answer will be wrong. Ask the average Christian or preacher what the new covenant is and they will not be able to tell you correctly either. It is amazing that most Christians and preachers today are so concerned with the new covenant and yet they can not even tell you with whom it was made with and what it is.

Hebrews 8:8
"For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with....."

The saved of the church.....All who come to Christ......Wrong answer. It is very clear who it says the new covenant is made with. Here is the rest of verse 8.

"...the house of Israel and with the house of Judah"

"The spiritual church"! No, it is not that either. The next verse tells us other wise.

Hebrew 8:9
"Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord."

These who did not continue in the covenant were the same people who received the new covenant, those people who Moses led by the hand out of Egypt. (It is impossible to spiritualize this verse because it is tied to a physical event.)

Hebrews 8:10a
"For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel....."

Love, love, love, peace, peace, peace, joy, joy, joy. No, the rest of the verse describes what the covenant really is.

Hebrews 8:10b
"...after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:"

First of all now who was the covenant made with? The descendants of the house of Israel and the house of Judah. Who are these people today? (Indisputable archeological evidence is available.) Today these people are identified as the Anglo-Saxon, Germanic, Scandinavian and kindred peoples. The covenant made with these people, what was it? It was God's Laws written in the their minds and on their hearts. Notice that the emphasis is that the covenant is God's Laws. That is the new covenant. The above Hebrews quote is taken from Jeremiah 31:31-33.

"Behold, the days come, saith Yahweh, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah (32) Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith Yahweh (33) But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith Yahweh, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people."

The Laws of Yahweh, God, remain the same, only where they were written was changed. Rather than being motivated from stone tablets they are now, under the new covenant, inspired from their hearts. The Laws have not changed only where they are written. Now your heart should tell you that incest and bestiality are perversions even though we do not specifically have them written in the new testament. Why? Because if you're ancestry is in the above mentioned peoples then you are an Israelite and God has said that he placed his Law in your mind and in your heart. Also we know that they are still a transgression of God's Law because Paul wrote to Timothy that (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness (17) That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."

Now what scripture was Paul writing about when he said that all scripture was inspired of God? Other than a few writings by the apostles the only scripture in existence was the old testament at that time. What did Paul say about that? Notice that Paul tells us that the old testament scriptures are profitable for four things: Teaching, reproof, correction and training in righteousness. Now which of the four would you suppose would apply to bestiality and incest? How about training in righteousness. You see the new testament actually does teach God's Laws as it applies to these sins and many others. Because the new testament points us back to the old testament for training in righteousness. The new covenant is God's Law in our minds and on our hearts. Beyond that, there are nearly 40 new testament scriptures which tell us that God's Law is still applicable to us today under the new covenant. For example: Matthew 5:17

"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil"

That could not be any clearer. He did not come to abolish the Law. What did he come to do? "but to fulfil." People get hung up with the word, "fulfill". You might be tempted to say that since Christ fulfilled the Law we don't have to. We can go out and kill and commit adultery. Just because Christ fulfilled the Law does not mean that we don't continue to fulfill it as well especially in his footsteps.

Matthew 5:18-19
"For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. (19) Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

In verse 19 Christ says that if you want to be great in the Kingdom you need to be out teaching His (God's) Laws!

Romans 3:31
"Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law."

Most preachers say yes to the question in Romans 3:31 when they teach that God's Law is no longer in effect. Notice what Paul says after the question in verse 31. Was it Moses' law that we establish? No, it is God's Law.

Romans 7:12
"Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good."

Churches today want to make all kinds of things holy. Paul tells us what is holy here.

Romans 7:14
"For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin."

Most preachers today are teaching that the law is carnal, but God says it is spiritual. If you want to have a spiritual experience, study God's Law. It is exciting applying it to your life under this dispensation.

1 Timothy 1:8 "But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;"

There is a lawful use of God's Law today. So we know that God's Laws were not added at Mount Sinai. They were simply codified with the Mosaic covenant and they have continued to today with the exception of those laws that were added. Now let's ask the same to questions concerning the law regarding the Mosaic covenant. Was the Mosaic covenant in existence prior to Mount Sinai? No, of course not. It was what was added at Mount Sinai. Did the Mosaic covenant continue after "the seed should come", in other words after Christ came and died for our sins? Absolutely not. It was the tutor to lead us back to the Christ. That covenant that was added between the Abrahamic and Christian covenants could not continue once the new covenant began. One covenant always ends at the beginning of the next covenant. Consequently it was the Mosaic covenant and not God's Laws which were added and later put away by Christ. Now, hopefully you are starting to see the difference between the two.

Some may say that Galations 3:19 says that a law was added and not a covenant. What is a covenant? A covenant is a law. It may also contain many laws. A covenant, testament or a will all carry the weight of law. A will made by a person is a law. (such as: who is the administrator, how one is to be buried, who gets the inheritance) It is a law that in and of itself contains other laws and so is a covenant. In scripture there are places where the terms are used interchangeably.

Hebrews 7:19
"For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God."

What law is being discussed here? The law of Moses. You can not just take the word "law " and apply it to whatever law or covenant you want. There may be as many as seven different laws that the word "nomos, G3551" is applied to in the new testament. You have to let the context determine it. In this case what is it speaking about in verse 19 when it said that the, "law made nothing perfect"? It is referring to the Mosaic covenant that demanded perfect adherence to God's Laws for righteousness. That was impossible. Consequently the Mosaic law and it's application of God's Laws could make nothing perfect.

Hebrews 7:22
"By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament."

Here you see that "testament" is used in place of the word law or covenant. The previous covenant, Moses' covenant, was not as good as Christ covenant. There are some who will try to use the logic that since God's Law was a part of the covenant of Moses that it was done away with when Moses' covenant was abolished. God's Law was indeed a part of that covenant. God's Law was also a part of the Adamic and Abrahamic covenants and it is part of the Christian covenant as well. What has changed is the motivation for keeping God's Law. Under the added Mosaic covenant God's Law was kept out of forced compliance, motivated by fear in order to be righteous before God. Why was that? Paul says in Galations 3:19,

"It was added because of transgressions".

The people were forced to keep it by fear to be righteous before God. Under the Adamic, Abrahamic and Christian covenants it was to be kept freely motivated by love because they were already made righteous before God. In Matthew 22:37-40,

"Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. (38) This is the first and great commandment. (39) And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (40) On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

Under the new covenant these commandments hang there and we obey from the heart with love. So what was abolished if it was not the Law of God? The apostle Paul provides us with the answer. That which was abolished was that which was added. Thus the Mosaic covenant has come to an end and with it everything else which was not in existence prior to it's inception at Mount Sinai. The following were not in existence prior to Mount Sinai.
  1. The Levitical Priesthood. Which Christ as high priest and Christian Israelites as his priest has antiquated.
  2. Animal Sacrifices for the forgiveness of sin. Christ became our, once and for all, sacrifice.
  3. The Feast Days. These are no longer needed as they were performed under the law of Moses. As an example we no longer need to sacrifice a passover lamb. Christ is our passover lamb.
  4. Then most important. The requirement to keep God's Laws for Righteousness. Although God's Laws were in existence prior to Mount Sinai there was never the adherence required to be righteous. That was something that was added.
We were specifically told that in

Romans 10:4
"For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth."

People like to claim that Christ ended the law but they fail to read the rest of the verse. Christ is the end of the law for righteousness. Christ is not the end of the law period. He is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. The unbeliever is still under the old Mosaic law because he has not come to Christ. Only through Christ is the need for righteousness through the law put to an end. The Mosaic law was added and the way that it approached God's Law was added. God's Law was in existence before the Mosaic law. There is a distinct difference between the two. King David described God's Law in

Psalms 19:7-10
"The law of Yahweh is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of Yahweh is sure, making wise the simple. (8) The statutes of Yahweh are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of Yahweh is pure, enlightening the eyes. (9) The fear of Yahweh is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of Yahweh are true and righteous altogether. (10) More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb."

We wish that they were more to be desired than gold in most churches today. That they would look upon the Laws of God the way David did.

Psalms 19:11
"Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward."

Great reward? That is right. With them Christians can once again become the salt of the earth and only with them through Christ. With them we can restore Christian dominion. With them we can drive the anti-Christ from power. With them it might possibly be said of this nation once again what is said in

Deuteronomy 4:6-7
"Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. (7) For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as Yahweh our God is in all things that we call upon him for?"

It once was said of our people at a far earlier time. It was said of our people just not that long ago. Just 200 years, at the inception of this great nation. Hopefully once again when we establish God's Laws where they should be it will be said of us again. Then and only then will we be true lights to the rest of the world. Isn't it time that Christendom correctly understands the added and abolished law and in so doing restore God's Laws to their proper place?
