From an email: Can you explain more about tithes and offerings?

Tithes and offerings, the way it is done today, is mostly an invention of the church to raise operating costs. Some of the money may be used for "good works", but most is just to pay the electric bill and staff. Participation is voluntary.

The only place scripture has any requirement for this is in the Levitical priesthood. Christ now covers those requirements for us as Hebrews tells us.

One verse, 1 Corinthians 16:2, encouraged the Corinthians to "set aside" at home some money or other spare items to assist with a need. Here is what the Greek actually says.

1 Corinthians 16:2
"On the first of Sabbaths, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come."

This was a one time event to prepare for Paul's arrival that Spring so he could take some financial aid with him to Jerusalem. "First of Sabbaths" was in the Spring of the year. It is a good example for us though to keep some aid set aside for a legitimate need. Scripture does place limits on how much help one should give to an individual. In a normal situation it was never intended to be continual.

I am sure this was not what the email writer was expecting. Hopefully it will help them in their own study.
